It can be very easy for founders to fall into a trap of denial in the early stages of a startup’s life. But in order for your company to really take off, it’s critical to be honest with yourself and to build a community of friends and collaborators who are willing to challenge groupthink. In the first episode of our new series “The Main Function,” YC President and CEO Garry Tan explains how founders must face hard truths in order to take their company from dream to reality.

i’m releasing an AI / VR / AR product in the next week and i need some smart people to critique it. anyone interested?
Did not expect an Encanto reference but I am here for it👌🏼
I have a dream that is too big for even Musk, but I can’t forget about it, and I know it might even work out. Still am at a place where I earn 5 figures, no cofounder, I don’t know if I should be realistic or start it.
It seems like this video is about the danger of groupthink, yet it is itself a manifestation of the power of groupthink.
This video is scripted and produced in a way that keeps the audience engaged for prolonged periods of time without really saying much of substance. In recent years, this format was adopted ubiquitously by people who produce on-demand audio & video content, most notably high-budget podcasts. The reason is purely economic: ad revenue for creators on Spotify Podcasts and YouTube largely comes down to gross playback time. In terms of production costs it’s much cheaper to waste people’s time with “filler” then to communicate anything substantive, as long as you can use intricate editing techniques, background music, sound effects and verbal virtuosity to make the filler hypnotizing.
YC doesn’t make money on ads, obviously. Their content is all about PR and sales (i.e. getting more applications from founders), so there’s literally no reason for them to produce this kind of vapid, long-winded, flatulent and overproduced content that in certain cultures may even come across as narcissistic — except for the fact that it’s exactly the format that they see literally everywhere, and they just mimic what everybody else does without giving much thought as to why everybody else does it, and whether these reasons are relevant to YC. It’s form over substance, and it is exactly what you should watch out for in your own work as an entrepreneur, engineer, designer or whoever really.
Seeing the video I don’t know if I am in YC’s channel or in Garry’s 😂
DArkness creeps but we have light within @frontforumfocus

People should not settle at being contrarians and imagine that doing so, they access special insights. The truth is sometimes well beyond the current range of hypothesis.
People often become polarized people between two falsehoods, away from the truth.
When would someone expect to hear back for a late application?
Thanks Gary! The truth always wins. 👊🏼🙏
Amazing advice ! It applies to everything in life
My fav takeaway from Ray Dalio is to…Simultaneously being a dreamer and realist
Great advice! Thank you Garry!
Just left a failing startup and was surprised to learn how truly delusional the founder was. He wouldn’t listen and see what the data was telling us. He let his ego tank the business. He lashed out at those who came with clear-eyed insights and favored the yes men. What you share here is so vital for founders.
Love the new format! Very peaceful ambience with helpful advice. 👏
Applying for next batch, always love these helpful videos
porraaas. I love you dude!
Really tough eye-openers here. I guess advisors/mentors of a startup founder/CEO can also help with most “fake” founder believes in a Startup life cycle?
THANK U ALWAYS GARY💚
my goodness, i didnt learn anything at all
you want founders to be realistic yet you keep showing these stupid movies lol
so annoying
